How Often Do You Need to Clean Your Hamster’s Home?

Most pets, just like most people, need their homes cleaned about once a week. But that doesn’t mean you can ignore your hamster’s home the other six days of the week.

You should take a moment to spot clean the bathroom and do the dishes every day. When you feed your pets, remove the food bowl from you hamster’s home and empty it of leftovers. This is especially important if you’ve given them any fresh treats. Wipe the bowl with a tissue or paper towel before refilling it. And, while you’re there, you may want to scoop out visible debris in the bathroom area. Don’t forget to refresh the shavings here if you take some out.

What Goes into a Weekly Clean?

The most important part of cleaning your pet’s home is making sure your hamster (or hamsters, as they prefer) is secured. Exercise balls are a great way to do this, but as long as your hamster can’t escape for independent exploration, you should be fine.

Hamsters like their smells; they find it comforting. They also like things “just so”. One of the best ways to achieve both even after cleaning is to keep a small amount of your pet’s current bedding. As long as it’s not soiled or littered with food, you can set a small handful aside to replace it when you’re finished cleaning. All other shavings and disposable bedding should be thrown away when cleaning.

Remove any plastic toys and furniture and wash these in warm soapy water. Do the same for the tank or cage. Make sure all of these items are dry before replacing them. Never use bleach or heavy detergents to clean your hamster’s home. The smells are disconcerting and these substances are toxic to your pets. Hand washing dish soaps are your best bet unless you invest in pet-friendly sprays.

Don’t forget to wash out your pets’ food bowls and water bottles with hot, soapy water. Even though it may only have water in it, bacteria can build up in a water bottle if it’s not regularly cleaned.

When reassembling your hamster’s home, it’s imperative that you ensure everything is dry before replacing it. And, because your hamsters love things the way they left them, try to put all the furniture back in its place. You can just set a stack of bedding material just next your hamster’s favourite sleeping area.

Top Tips:
  • Hamsters can’t clean their own homes; you’ll need to do it for them. But, it’s not a whole lot of work if you keep up with it.
  • There are a few tasks you should do every day to ensure a happy, healthy home for your pets. This includes emptying the food bowl and doing a spot clean of the toilet area.
  • A thorough clean is in order once a week. This involves throwing away old bedding and shavings and washing all plastic components.
  • Remember that your hamster likes his smells. You may want to hang on to a bit of old bedding – and you’ll definitely want to avoid using heavy detergents and bleach.
  • Don’t forget to clean food and water bowls in hot water once a week to avoid a bacteria buildup.
