Feeding Tips
Remember that good quality hay and/or grass should make up the majority of your rabbits’ diet and should be available at all times. Rabbits should also be fed a small amount of leafy greens each day. Please talk to your vet for further information. If you are currently feeding a muesli style food to your rabbits you should gradually transfer your pets onto a hay and nugget based feeding plan over a period of between 14 and 28 days, by gradually reducing the amount of muesli and increasing the proportion of nuggets until they have completely replaced the mix. Always ensure you are monitoring your rabbits’ weight to ensure a healthy weight. Always ensure fresh clean water is available for your rabbit.

Sticking to The Excel Feeding Plan will ensure your rabbits get the right amounts of fibre in their diet. The Excel Feeding Plan was developed by the world's leading small-animal vets, to provide a perfect daily balance of fibre and nutrition.

The Excel Feeding Plan is a simple five step guide to help pet owners understand the high levels of beneficial fibre required by fibrevores. It is the only complementary range that, when used together, delivers extremely high levels of the right kinds of fibre needed in fibrevores’ diets and effectively promotes and maintains the dental, digestive and emotional health and longevity of these pets.

High-quality, dust extracted feeding hay should make up 85-90% of your rabbit's diet. You should make sure it is freely available and replaced with fresh hay every day. They are especially good for dental health as the gnawing action required to eat them helps to wear down teeth.

Excel Tasty Nuggets should be fed as a supplement to feeding hay or grass to ensure your rabbits get all the minerals they need. You should look for nugget products appropriate to your rabbits' life stage.

These delicious, natural and healthy snacks can be fed in small amounts either by hand to help bonding, left in housing to keep your rabbits occupied or sprinkled through feeding hay to encourage foraging.

Rabbits can be fed fresh greens as a treat to add variety and provide additional nutrition. Have a look at our guide to feeding greens below to find out what can be fed to your bunnies.

Everyday: Grasses (not lawn clippings), dandelion leaves, plantain, herb robert, rose bush leaves, nasturtium, wild geranium, strawberry and raspberry leaves, hazel tree leaves & branches, willow tree leaves & branches, apple tree leaves & branches, Hawthorn, brambles, goosegrass, blackthorn, nettle (dried), cauliflower leaves, celery leaves, green pepper, kale, mint, romaine lettuce (not iceberg lettuce), spring greens.
Occasionally (In Small Amounts): Apple (pipless), banana, savoy cabbage, turnip, carrot tops, swede, spinach, parsley, basil, dill, oregano, coriander.

A plentiful supply of fresh water should always be available. Change it daily in warm weather and ensure it hasn't frozen over during winter months.

My bunnies go crazy for it and are a picture of health! It's also, in my opinion, the best rabbit food available on the South African market as the other muesli mixes often contain things that aren't very good for them. I had excellent service from Pet Habitat- ordered in the morning and had received it by the afternoon!

I started feeding my Binky his Burgess Excel nuggets, Herbage and Herbs yesterday and he absolutely loves it! I will never use anything else ever again! I live in Namibia and postage and import tax can get expensive but with all the discount Pet Habitat has given me it is more than the money worth! Also, on my first order I received a bag of bedding and litter and four boxes of salad treats which my Binky absolutely loves! Thank you so much Pet Habitat, you opened up a whole new world of healthy treats for my Binky!

I only found out about Burgess Excel nuggets a few months ago and I'm incredibly satisfied with this superior quality rabbit pellets. My rabbit loves it! There are also quite a few positive changes I've noticed since swapping over to Burgess pellets such as: The droppings are bigger than they use to be, indicating a healthy digestive tract. My rabbit drinks a lot more water. (Instead of finishing a water bottle over 3 days he now finishes 1 a day.) He also eats more hay since the change. Seeing my bunny so healthy and happy is all the reason I need to buy this product. Definitely going to switch to the Burgess hay soon!

Our two rabbits absolutely love these nuggets. We feed them a small amount every morning and evening and they know when "nuggy time" is almost upon them as they wait expectantly next to the food cupboard. Full of the right nutrients and containing a high amount of fibre, these are the perfect food for any rabbit.

Our Netherlands Dwarf is not quite a year old yet and has had two episodes of GI Stasis (one very recently). We've been feeding our little boy fresh greens, oat hay and (sadly) a muesli-type pellet mix which our breeder supplies. After reading your very informative article about the dangers of muesli-style pellet mixes, we stopped giving that to him immediately, bought him fresh orchard grass to supplement the oat hay and a bag of Burgess Adult nuggets with mint. Perhaps it's coincidence but after a few days of being on these pellets and eating different grass, our little bun is visibly so much happier! He's loving the new Burgess pellets with mint, is eating far more hay and grass than he ever used to and seems to have a lot more energy. Thanks for a great quality product and honest and informative articles! We'll definitely continue using Burgess pellets (and intend to try other products in the range too) over the foreseeable future. Happier bun, happier parents! :-)

We have 2 Dwarf hotots, both rescues, very fussy little eaters and they absolutely love the Burgess Excel Adult Rabbit Nuggets with Mint.
We have great troubles with feeding and this is truly a "lifesaver"
Curly Kale , their favourite green , has been particularly difficult to find of late!
