Why is Newhay Timothy Hay so good?
It provides 100% of the daily fibre your small pet needs, and a host of other healthy benefits.
- Reduces boredom
- Healthier teeth
- Aids digestion
- Low in sugar
- Low impurities (bacteria & spores)
There are three parts to a timothy hay plant, all of which provide the ideal feed for herbivores. Hay for feeding small pets should contain approximately 7% protein and 30% fibre.
There are many varieties of hay, but imported Timothy hay are better quality than Teff hays in South Africa because they have a high fibre content, are more palatable and with course texture are great for chewing and maintaining healthy teeth. Teff hay in South Africa on the other hand is a softer, finer, less fibrous type of hay.
Hay produced in South Africa are also traditionally sun-dried whilst leading hay manufacturers such as Newhay in U.K. are using the latest developments in technology to produce high quality feeding hay.
Why is Newhay timothy hay gently machine dried indoors?
Using a gentle indoor machine drying process that is Co2 neutral to produce hay provides a range of advantages:
- The harvesting process is less dependent on the weather, and therefore easier to plan.
- More of the nutrients remain preserved in the hay which therefore requires you to feed less to provide ideal maintenance. This is a considerable cost advantage of machine-dried hay.
- The animals are also healthier, the vet bills lower.
- The quality of the hay is clear to be seen: even after drying, it preserves a colour and smell that makes it seem freshly mown. This also attests to the hay’s nutritional value: 5% more protein content (This explains why Newhay boasts 12% protein content)
What is Timothy Hay?
- Timothy Hay, named after an American farmer from the eighteenth century, is a variety of grass hay that is high in fibre, and low in protein, sugar and calcium making it ideal for your small pet’s digestive system, teeth and overall health.
- This premium variety is abundant and native to most of Europe except for the Mediterranean region and is one of the Phleum genus (grasses native to temperate regions), consisting of about 15 species of annual and perennial grasses.
- A good quality Timothy Hay should look green, smell fresh and be free from dust and mould. If stored well, Timothy Hay can last for several years. As nature intended Processed to deliver the natural health benefits of wild grazing and satisfy the biological instincts of small herbivores, our premium quality feeding hay is as healthy as it is irresistible, even for the fussiest of pets.

Finally tried out the newhay brand and the rabbits really liked it! Has a lovely fresh smell, is nice and green and although it’s been chopped up into quite small pieces it is surprisingly “dust” free, which is great, would recommend! and we will be trying out the other types of newhay.
