Protein Skimmers are a general name within the marine hobby for pieces of equipment that are designed to remove waste materials and proteins from the water column by a process called foam fractionation. In general terms a protein skimmer works by introducing high levels of air bubbles through a body of water containing waste materials. The waste and proteins are attracted to the air water interface and flow upwards with the surface where they can be collected. The larger the volume of air and the smaller the bubbles then the more surface area that is available to attract the proteins and the more efficient the skimmer.
There are two philosophies regarding the control of waste in a marine aquarium. Cermedia has been receiving many requests for a MarinePure media designed to work in smaller aquariums. Just this month, Cermedia made an announcement to us that they are meeting this demand with a new product called, MarinePure GEMS.
Made with the same formula as their popular 1.5” SPHERES, the GEMs are approximately ¾” in diameter. GEMs will be packaged in attractive hexagonal shaped boxes containing 90 grams of media.
We think the product shape and box shape look pretty cool and will stand out on aquarium store shelves. Each box contains more than 1,450 square feet (135 square meters) of accessible surface area. Ranging from R1600 for the Aquael Shrimpet Smart 10 aquarium set to R13 0000 for the Aquael Glossy 120 with cabinet, there is an aquascaping solution to fit all budgets. Smaller aquariums cost less to aquascape and have smaller running costs. Larger aquariums have greater environmental stability, bigger livestock options and capacity.
Bigger tanks will usually take longer to maintain. Water changes, large surfaces of glass to clean and lots of plants to trim can be time consuming. Smaller tanks can be water changed, cleaned and trimmed in less than 30 minutes but the largest aquariums will often take several hours.
Consider where you want to be viewing the aquarium from and where is practical. For example lifting an Aquael Leddy 60 up a flight of stairs is significantly easier than an Aquael Leddy 75.
