Why Do You Need to Groom Your Guinea Pigs and How Often? Long haired guinea pigs offer a convenient hiding place for mites and other parasites. It’s just so easy to snuggle into their hair and so difficult for other guinea pigs to take care of these pests. Besides mites and lice, long haired guinea pigs battle with knotted fur which can become dangerous for them. And, with all that hair, it’s easy for all sorts of dirt and debris to remain on your piggy. And that never smells good.
Your long haired guinea pigs need your help with a monthly bath and grooming session. If you notice that your piggy needs it more often, then do it. Don’t forget that you may need to pull out the comb or scissors a little more frequently if you spot tangles and troubles.
How Do You Give a Guinea Pig a Grooming Bath?
The short answer to this is… very carefully. It’s important to bear in mind that you should only ever bathe your guinea pigs if absolutely .. [More]

Setting up a planted aquarium may seem like a big task to start with which may put some people off, but you can make a basic planted tank very easily and the extra maintenance is worth it for a beautiful and more natural aquarium.
For a basic tank, we will start with a low-tech aquarium such as Aquael Shrimpset and Brillux tanks – leaving out CO2. This will mean that your planted aquarium will take longer to grow and you may not be able to grow certain plants, but is much easier for a beginner. You do not have to do any water testing or changes, do not have to prune your plants as much and algae growth is much slower. If you are happy to put up with a bit more hassle and want your tank to grow quicker, then we would recommend including CO2 in your planted aquarium set-up.
There are a few steps you must follow to get started with your planted aquarium. It may be worth having a rough vision of what you would like to achieve before you start to make sure you get t.. [More]

If you haven’t yet adopted a rabbit, your very best bet is to ensure that you bring home a bonded pair. This will save you plenty of time – and perhaps a few tears too. That’s because bonding a pair of rabbits can take anywhere between two weeks and a few months. It all depends on the pair. Of course, once they have bonded, you’ll find it’s impossible to separate them. If you’re looking to bond an existing pet with a new rabbit, you should consider adopting your new family member from a shelter. Not only is the staff at rescue shelters exceptionally knowledgeable about bonding procedures, but you’ll also be offering a special rabbit a new lease on life. This will also enable you to introduce your rabbit to many possible friends, allowing him to choose the bunny he’s most interested in spending his time with.

This week we were asked… “My partner and I have been thinking about adopting a cat but I already have a hamster. Is this safe?” Here is our advice to you!
We would all love to adopt as many animals as possible but first it’s worth asking yourself if those pets will get along. This mostly depends on the individual pets and their personalities. As you already have a hamster, it may be the case that a new cat will see the home as the hamster’s territory before their own and have no problem by living in the same space. On the other hand make sure you never underestimate your cat no matter how friendly and approachable it may be to you!
Cats and hamsters can live in the same house without any problems. However we suggest taking the following precautions for the safety and comfort of your pet before welcoming another animal into your home.
Firstly, before you make the decision on adopting a cat ensure that if the two pets do not ge.. [More]

Chinchillas are friendly animals that are well-known for their timid nature and soft, luxurious fur. They can make a great pet for older children and adults – but how many of these facts did you know about them?
1. The word chinchilla literally translates to ‘little Chincha’. The beloved pet was originally named after the Chincha people who once lived in the Andes Mountains in Peru.
2. Chinchillas are native creatures to South America, in particular within northern Chile and Peru. The rodents are extremely sociable and often live in groups of the hundreds in the Andes mountain range. On average they live on high grounds, often settling at 15,000 feet in the mountains. Although they are now usually a silver colour, in the wild Chinchillas are originally thought to have been a yellow-grey colour.
3. Their famous fur is so thick as a result of adapting to their mountainous habitat. Chinchilla fur is very dense to deal with cold temperatures. A Chinc.. [More]

The latest feeding recommendation for rabbits, guinea pigs and chinchillas is a diet of 80% grass hay and/or fresh grass. But why are there so many pet owners reluctant to do this? Maybe there is a fear that their beloved pet will starve to death. Or how do we know if our hay in South Africa is good enough? It has been proven that only a diet of hay provides them with good digestive health as well as physical and mental stimulation.
Concentrated food such as pellets, nuggets or dry food mixtures (also called muesli) must constitute only 10% of the diet because they don’t contain the right type of fibre. Failing to provide adequate portions of the right kind of fibre can rapidly lead to illness or death.
Because grass/hay does not appeal to humans, we have decided to feed more concentrated foods. Many people today are becoming more and more conscious of what they putting into their bodies. This is why we always look at the nutritional information on the back of .. [More]

Timothy hay is an essential part of your rabbit, guinea pig or chinchilla’s diet. Hopefully, most owners will be aware of this as there are many factors which make Timothy hay extremely important to your pets.
Timothy hay is basically the dried, preserved form of Timothy Grass that grows throughout the UK. This type of grass is full of essential fibre which is exactly what your fibrevores need to live long and healthy lives.
It’s recommended that you feed your fibrevores the equivalent to their own body size in Timothy hay every single day. You’ll then need to give them extra to sleep in and to play with.
Our Burgess Excel Herbage is made using Timothy hay, with added dried herbs and flowers including dandelions, chamomile, marigold and birch bark to add extra variety, taste and nutritional benefits.
Here are a few reasons as to why your pets should be having Timothy hay in their diets…

The story of how chinchillas made it into our homes as pets is rather an interesting one. They were initially used as laboratory animals, but it appears that researchers simply couldn’t get enough of them. So, a few were secreted out as pets and from there, the popularity of these animals grew. And, it’s easy to see why. Chinchillas are wonderfully inquisitive and active creatures. They simply love playing. And they don’t ask for a lot to make this playtime special. But, more than anything, what they need is a balanced diet. Once they have this, they’ll do most of the work themselves.
Chinchillas Are Fibrevores
There is a small group of animals known as fibrevores. This group includes rabbits, guinea pigs and chinchillas. Unlike other vegetarian animals, fibrevores don’t just eat fruits, vegetables and grasses. These animals need such an incredible amount of fibre in their diet to survive that it is almost unbelievable.
As such.. [More]

Successful aquariums depend greatly on research and preparation. Just as you research the care requirements of the fish you are interested in, you will also need to think about fundamental aspects such as aquarium placement. Before you install your new aquarium, consider aquarium placement and size to avoid laborious and costly mistakes.
Location
An aquarium placed in a back room or basement may not receive the care or attention it needs. Oftentimes a poorly located aquarium can result in neglect, increasing risk of fish disease or equipment malfunction that remains unnoticed. Set up your aquarium where you spend most of your time. By doing so, you can fully enjoy the results of your endeavour. Choose a room where you will be able to view and take pleasure in your aquatic system. But more importantly, place the aquarium where it is easily accessible for regular and convenient maintenance.
Keep in mind, once fully set up, aquariums weigh 1 kilogram per 1 litre of wate.. [More]

It is easy to fall in love with a hamster, isn’t it? Sure, they’re not the most social creatures, especially when it comes to interacting with their human owners (though you can overcome this with enough contact with your pets). But, hamsters are just so little, adorable, inquisitive and busy. And that makes them a bundle of fun to watch. If only they shared more waking hours with us, right?
But, no matter how small these pets are, they still need regular care just as any larger animal would do. And, once you’ve filled their cage with plenty of interesting activities and snuggly places to sleep, then it’s time to worry about what your wonderful little hamsters need to eat.
So, Just What Do Hamsters Eat?
Hamsters eat the food that comes in packets with their name on it, right? Well, yes, though you should probably get a little more specific than that if you want to be the best hamster owner possible. For a start, it’s essential to not.. [More]
