Finding The Right Hamster Cage
Posted By : Guest Filed Under : Pet Cages | Hamsters | Rotastak | Pet Inn
There is a huge variety of hamsters cages on the market, but not all cages are created equally. Most of the cages that are sold as 'hamster cages' are actually suitable for dwarf hamsters and don't provide enough floor space for the larger species of syrian hamster, or have components that aren't safe for a larger hamster. A cage is the most important investment you'll make for your hamster, so you want to choose wisely. There are various hamster housing options, each with pros and cons. To find the right one for your hamster, consider factors such as species type, safety, maintenance, budget, and above all, size. A rule that you must always follow: Syrian hamsters cannot be housed together! They are territorial, solitary animals and will fight and inflict serious wounds to each other if not kept apart. They can, however, be kept near each other in separate housing. Dwarf hamsters MIGHT be kept together in same-sex housing. Size it up In the wild, hamsters h.. [More] types of hamster cages.jpg

Meet The Skinny Pig
Posted By : Guest Filed Under : Guinea Pigs | Pet Care
They are small, hairless and have been taking the UK by storm... meet the skinny pig. The bald creatures are just a few inches long and can easily fit in the palm of your hand standing them out from the larger and more common guinea pigs. The bald animals must live indoors and need sun cream in summer Unlike their Peruvian cousins, 'Skinnys' do not occur naturally in the wild, but were created by scientists in The Institute Armand Frappier lab in Montreal in Canada in 1978. Because they only have a small amount of hair on their muzzles, feet and legs skinnys have become a popular choice for animal lovers with allergies to hair. 'Skinnies, as they're known, can come in a variety of colours and patterns, such as Dutch, tortoiseshell, Himalayan and many others. The skinny pig (left) is smaller than its Peruvian cousin (right) While they typically have hair on their muzzles, feet, and legs, they are hairless over the remainder of their bodies.' However,.. Feeding Your Rat Quality Food
Posted By : Guest Filed Under : Nutrition | Rats and Mice
Rats make excellent pets; they are wonderfully social both with other rats, and their owners. In fact, many families that opt for hamsters, which are largely antisocial are actually looking for the qualities of rats. However, rats have been misunderstood in popular imagination for years. And truly, there is a vast difference between the rats you find in pet shops and the feral ones in the streets. These pets are growing in popularity though, due to their charming ways (and their ability to keep themselves cleaner than other pets of the same size). With their winning ways, it is possible to fall in love with a rat before knowing exactly how to care for her. The key is to ensure you treat your rat like any other pet. This means providing a clean and safe home, as well as plenty of food. Nutrition is key for any pet’s health and happiness, and rats are no different. Rat Feeding Basics Rats are scavengers – those rumours are true. They love digging.. [More] fancy rat.jpg

New Rice Diet For Birds
Posted By : Guest Filed Under : Nutrition | Birds | Roudybush
Roudybush introduces a new maintenance diet formulated from rice products, minerals, and vitamins. Birds showing signs of allergies to other food products, such as feather picking/self mutilation, may benefit from this diet. Roudybush is proud to take avian nutrition to a new level with the introduction of our new Rice Diet. Roudybush Rice Diet can be a powerful and easy tool to determine whether common destructive behaviors such as self mutilation or feather picking may be caused by a food allergy. Current allergy testing techniques can be unreliable and is one of the reasons diagnosing and treating these disorders are difficult. Rice Diet was developed to help both veterinary professionals and bird owners keep healthy, happy birds. Rice Diet is available in Mini and Small size pellets for birds from budgies to macaws. Although the Rice Diet is a Careline product, it does not require a veterinarian's prescription and can be sold over-the-counter. With all seriou.. [More] rice diet blog.jpg

Hay For Health And Happiness
Posted By : Guest Filed Under : Nutrition | Chinchillas | Guinea Pig Food | Rabbit Food | Timothy Hay | Bunny Nature | Newhay
Hay should form the foundation of a rabbit’s, guinea pig’s and chinchilla’s diet and you need to make sure you are feeding a plentiful supply each and every day. There are a number of different types of hay available and certain things you should look out for before feeding, so in this post we aim to walk you through them…   timothy grass Pay Close Attention… Before offering the hay to your pets make sure it is clean, free of dust and smelling fresh. To keep it at its peak you need to store the hay in a sealed bag in an area free from damp because it can quickly spoil. Keep it tightly packed because air helps it to become dry and brittle, which needs to be avoided. Hay retains a wonderful aroma, so have a smell – you should be able to smell the aroma of a grassy meadow. Be consistent… Fibrevores have a sensitive digestive system which does not cope well with frequent or rapid change. You should try and stick to a .. [More] timothy hay grasses.jpg

Caring For Rabbit's Oral Health
Posted By : Guest Filed Under : Rabbits | Pet Care
Like all domestic pets, rabbits need their fair share of attention and care. As one of the most popular pets in South Africa, these animals are coming ever closer to our hearts. And, we are learning increasingly more about the proper way to love these pets so they can live long, healthy and happy lives. A great deal of media attention has been paid to proper housing of domesticated rabbits, and every year around Easter, the public is urged not to adopt bunnies arbitrarily as gifts as this leads to a surge in rescue efforts annually. One area that receives exceedingly little attention, unless tied to overall digestion is oral health and hygiene. Fortunately, rabbits do not need to brush their teeth, but they do have terribly specific concerns. Rabbit owners should know the main concerns, how to spot them – and more importantly, how to prevent them. What Big Teeth You Have! Unlike humans, rabbit teeth continue to grow throughout their lifetime. On a.. [More] rabbit oral health.jpg

Guinea Pig Food - Complete or Complementary
Posted By : Guest Filed Under : Nutrition | Guinea Pigs | Guinea Pig Food | Bunny Nature
Guinea Pigs, also known as Cavies, make wonderful pets. They are small, gentle creatures who typically have a good nature, rarely biting when handled correctly. Many people do not know that when cared for in the correct manner a guinea pig can live as long as eight years or more.   Feeding your guinea pig a good diet of quality food is important and there are a number of things you should consider about your guinea pig’s diet: Complete Food? We believe that no single guinea pig food can be labelled as “complete”. Your pet’s dietary requirements are complex so you need to feed a combination of foods to satisfy his needs. You should instead look for guinea pig food which is labelled as “Complementary”. Complementary guinea pig food will be a mix of several core elements. These elements should include hay and grass, which deliver fibre, nuggets, fresh greens and water. The problems with feeding muesli Guinea Pig Muesli is not t.. [More] guinea pig next to bowl.jpg

Keeping House Rabbits Happy
Posted By : Guest Filed Under : Rabbits | Pet Care
House rabbits make wonderful pets and can live happily indoors throughout the year, provided you meet all their welfare needs. There are a number of considerations you need to make before committing to owning house rabbits so you can be sure that this is the right pet for you, and vice versa. Companionship Rabbits are social creatures and thrive in the company of others. We would always advise owning more than one rabbit; neutered males and females usually make a great pairing, especially if they have been brought up together. If you own a rabbit and are adding a second rabbit take time to introduce them slowly. You may find that they are initially hostile towards each other so seek advice from your vet or local rescue so that you understand how to bond your rabbits successfully. Exercise You need to provide your house rabbits with the opportunity to dig, graze and exercise, just like they would do in the wild so why not grow trays of grass, and provide c.. Taking Care of Chinchillas
Posted By : Guest Filed Under : Nutrition | Chinchillas
It’s important to feed your chinchilla the right food. Chinchillas like all animals have quite specific dietary requirements and shouldn’t be fed food meant for other animals. Food that is meant for rabbits, or a generic food designed for all small mammals will not have the right balance of nutrients for your chinchilla. Vets report that 80% of chinchillas that come into their practice have a health problem that is directly related to poor diet. Common ailments are constipation, overgrown teeth, obesity and other problems related to these primary issues. The good news is that many of these are easily prevented if owners understood a bit more about what their chinchillas should be eating and why. Consider a day in the life of a wild chinchilla. He would spend 70% of his time searching out or 'foraging' for food while keeping a beady eye out for predators, to make sure he wasn't going to end up as someone else's dinner! His diet would be mainly made up of grasses, .. [More] chinchillaplayfull.jpg
