Why is Timothy Hay Important For Fibrevores?
Posted By : Guest Filed Under : Nutrition | Chinchillas | Guinea Pig Food | Rabbit Food | Timothy Hay | Bunny Nature | Newhay
Timothy hay is an essential part of your rabbit, guinea pig or chinchilla’s diet. Hopefully, most owners will be aware of this as there are many factors which make Timothy hay extremely important to your pets.   Timothy hay is basically the dried, preserved form of Timothy Grass that grows throughout the UK. This type of grass is full of essential fibre which is exactly what your fibrevores need to live long and healthy lives. It’s recommended that you feed your fibrevores the equivalent to their own body size in Timothy hay every single day. You’ll then need to give them extra to sleep in and to play with. Our Burgess Excel Herbage is made using Timothy hay, with added dried herbs and flowers including dandelions, chamomile, marigold and birch bark to add extra variety, taste and nutritional benefits. Here are a few reasons as to why your pets should be having Timothy hay in their diets… Dental Fibrevore’s teeth never stop gro.. [More] guineapigbooboo1.jpg

What Does Your Chinchilla Eat?
Posted By : Guest Filed Under : Nutrition | Chinchillas
The story of how chinchillas made it into our homes as pets is rather an interesting one. They were initially used as laboratory animals, but it appears that researchers simply couldn’t get enough of them. So, a few were secreted out as pets and from there, the popularity of these animals grew. And, it’s easy to see why. Chinchillas are wonderfully inquisitive and active creatures. They simply love playing. And they don’t ask for a lot to make this playtime special. But, more than anything, what they need is a balanced diet. Once they have this, they’ll do most of the work themselves.   Chinchillas Are Fibrevores There is a small group of animals known as fibrevores. This group includes rabbits, guinea pigs and chinchillas. Unlike other vegetarian animals, fibrevores don’t just eat fruits, vegetables and grasses. These animals need such an incredible amount of fibre in their diet to survive that it is almost unbelievable. As such.. [More] chinnie.jpg

Buy Only Registered Pet Food
Posted By : Guest Filed Under : Nutrition | Chinchillas | Guinea Pig Food | Rabbit Food | Bird Food
The Pet Food Industry Association of Southern Africa (PFI) has vowed to eliminate petfood fraud and protect South African pet owners from "rogue petfood manufacturers." Consumers can do their part by only buying commercial petfood that has a "V" number followed by "Act 36 of 1947" on its packaging. This indicates that the food has been registered by its manufacturer or distributor. “It is absolutely critical for pet owners to ensure that the food they purchase is registered with the department, as this is the only way to ensure that the minimum nutritional standards are met and that the food has been examined to ensure this, and, further, that your pet is getting the best possible and safe food for them,” said PFI Executive Director Barry Hundley. Pet Habitat is pleased to announce that all Burgess Excel Nuggets and Roudybush bird pellets have been approved and are registered with Department of Agriculture. It was not easy since w.. Guide To Feeding Hay To Fibrevores
Posted By : Guest Filed Under : Nutrition | Rabbits | Guinea Pigs | Chinchillas | Guinea Pig Food | Rabbit Food | Timothy Hay
Many homes are simply not complete without a few pets around. And, not every pet is a cat or a dog. There are many, many different pets that people can keep in their homes. Each one of them has special needs and dietary requirements. And, feeding your pets the right food – and the right amount of food is paramount to their continued health. Indeed, it is one of the things you’ll need to consider long before you bring home your pets. Otherwise, you’ll run the risk of them falling ill – or worse. Keep in mind, that with all the different needs that every pet has, they don’t all need dry food. While this may be the best bet for your dogs and cats, other animals require different foods. Sometimes, those foods may seem rather boring to you, such as Timothy Hay, but they are essential to some animals. Who Eats Timothy Hay? Some animals are carnivores (or rather, omnivores) and some that are strictly vegetarian. Within that latter group a.. [More] guineapigsmiling.jpg

A Quick Guide to Feeding Hay
Posted By : Guest Filed Under : Nutrition | Rabbits | Guinea Pigs | Chinchillas | Guinea Pig Food | Rabbit Food | Timothy Hay | Pet Care | Bunny Nature | Newhay
It’s funny how some of the most iconic stories and images we have in our minds of rabbits involve them eating vegetables (think Peter Rabbit or Bugs Bunny). They certainly do love treats like carrot tops, but these are treats only. Rabbits, like other fibrevores, need a great deal more than vegetables to survive. And mostly what they need are grasses and hay.   Who and What Are Fibrevores? Fibrevores is a bit of a funny term isn’t it? And, it’s hardly one of the terms we learn in school; instead we’re treated to carnivores, herbivores and omnivores. So, let’s work with what we know. Fibrevores are herbivores – they don’t eat any meat. But, they’re a tad more specialised than that. They have developed a strong, overwhelming need for fibre. Fibre, of course, is found in grains and grasses. Of course, we have it added to some of our foods to keep us moving, but for the most part, fibrevores get their daily intake of fibre .. Enrichment Ideas for Small Furries
Posted By : Guest Filed Under : Rabbits | Guinea Pigs | Chinchillas | Hamsters | Pet Care | Rats and Mice
A lot of importance is placed on the diets we feed our pets and the homes we provide for them. In fact, sometimes it seems like that’s all the information that we have on our small furries. Of course, that’s hardly the case. If you’ve got a small furry (from a hamster to a rabbit), consider these ideas to entertain and enrich the lives of your pets. Hamsters – These are some of the smallest pets you’ll find, and they’re also some of the easiest to provide enriching activities for. That’s because they’ll play with just about anything they can get their tiny hands on. Unfortunately, they will want to do most of their playing while you are asleep, so the best time to interact with these pets is just before you go to bed (that’s breakfast time for your small furries). This is the perfect time to watch your pets scamper around in hamster balls; they’ll enjoy it just as much as you. And, once you do head off to bed, you.. [More] chinchillaplaying.jpg

Tips For Keeping Chinchillas Happy
Posted By : Guest Filed Under : Chinchillas | Pet Care
Chinchillas are fascinating pets, and like most rodents, they are remarkably clever. Of course, being beautiful to behold, and soft as silk to the touch isn’t a good enough reason to keep chinchillas as pets. Fortunately, given a bit of space, plenty of love, a proper diet and following these tips will make it easy for you to keep your chinchillas happy and healthy for as long as they live (which can be up to 20 years). Understanding Chinchilla Needs As with most pets, there are a few key areas where their owners can focus for chinchilla health. When caring for and handling your pet, you should always keep these needs in mind. Eating – Chinchillas have a special digestive system that allows them to pull the necessary fibre from their diet. In order to keep everything running smoothly, and to maintain excellent health, chinchillas need access to plenty of fresh Timothy Hay every day. Sleeping – These beautiful anim.. RSPCA Feeding Guideline For Chinchillas
Posted By : Guest Filed Under : Nutrition | Chinchillas | Pet Care
Providing a healthy and well-balanced diet for your chinchilla is essential to his health and will ensure he has the best quality of life possible. Most health problems stem from an owner providing incorrect nutrition, which can be avoided with good education. With so many chinchilla food options out there, how do you know which is the best for your pet? Consider a day in the life of a wild chinchilla. He would spend 70% of his time above ground searching out or 'foraging' for food while keeping a beady eye out for predators, to make sure he wasn't going to end up as someone else's dinner! His diet would be mainly made up of grasses, hay, herbs and bark - all high fibre foods! His territory would be the equivalent of around 30 tennis courts meaning he'd get a lot of exercise every day searching out food across that area. The chinchilla's whole existence has evolved around this high fibre diet. Many chinchilla owners do not take into consideration a chin.. [More] chinchilla with child.jpg

Chinchillas And Hay
Posted By : Guest Filed Under : Nutrition | Chinchillas
Chinchillas are attractive pets – they’re friendly, cute, and low maintenance. Chinchillas are suitable for many ages, in big cities or the country, for both new pet owners and those dedicated to chinchillas. However, chinchillas are not the same as cats and dogs. You wouldn’t take care of a horse the same way you’d take care of a dog. You wouldn’t take care of a hamster the same way you’d take care of a goldfish. Similarly, chinchiillas have some needs that are different than the needs of other types of pets. One of the most common problems with owning an exotic pet (reptile, chinchilla, bird, etc) is that very often is it difficult to find information on proper nutrition. Although caring for a chinchilla seems simple, feeding them is not quite as straightforward as buying a bag of dog food at the pet store. Chinchillas are strict herbivores. Unlike dogs and cats, chinchillas’ digestive systems are built to efficiently digest toug.. [More] chinchillaeatshay.jpg
