What Is the Best Diet For Parrots In South Africa?
Posted By : Guest Filed Under : Nutrition | Birds | Roudybush | Bird Food | TOPs Parrot Food
There is a lack of scientific study on avian nutrition, especially as it relates to different bird species, but most experts agree that a good diet for parrots begin with a formulated pellet diet with a variety of other foods added as supplements. A diet based primarily on seeds is deficient in many nutrients, including vitamin A and calcium, and is too high in fat.    This is not to say that seed do not have a place in avian diets, but many birds come to prefer them to the exclusion of other healthy choices and can be fussy when it comes to trying a varied diet. Some birds will even pick out a couple of favorites from a seed mix, which further reduces the nutritional balance in the diet. When it comes to parrot nutrition, consider seeds to be somewhat like junk food: birds love them, but they are not the healthiest choice. For most species of parrot, seeds should only make up about 10 percent of the diet. Some species, like budgies and cockatiels are naturally .. [More] budgieseatsseeds.jpg

Posted By : Guest Filed Under : Guinea Pigs | Bedding | Carefresh
What is the best bedding for guinea pigs for ultimate comfort and odour control? Guinea pigs make a great first pet. Not only do they have fun personalities and make the cutest noises – they often purr when they are happy, but they are also very easy to care for.    Make sure you have space in your home and your heart for two guinea pigs, as they are very social creatures; and it is recommended that you adopt a pair of same-gendered Guinea pigs. When setting up their home, make sure you have a lot of space for them, as they spend a lot of time nesting in comfy bedding. Line the bottom of their habit with a good quality, soft and absorbent bedding that keeps them warm and safe but keeps odours under control. It should be easy to clean up and biodegradable for easy disposal. There are several types of bedding available for Guinea Pigs to nest in, including paper-based, fleece, wood, and hay. Why Chinchillas Love Blue Sparkle Dust?
Posted By : Guest Filed Under : Chinchillas | Chinchilla Bath Dust
Chinchillas have dense fur. Over time, oils and moisture collect in their fur. In the wild, chinchillas have no way to clean their fur other than to roll around in volcanic ash which acts as an absorbent. You should never bathe your chinchilla in water. Doing so would remove the natural oils which protect their skin and helps them regulate their body temperature. Instead, it is best to give them a bowl or container filled with "special" dust for them to roll around in. The finer the dust, the better.   A regular dust bath is an absolute necessity for chinchillas. Taking a vigorous dust bath is one of their natural behaviors, and is how chinchillas keep their lush coats clean and healthy. Not only does this dust bath help to keep their thick fur smooth and silky, it is thought to be relaxing and fun for chinchillas. Blue Sparkle is the best chinchilla dust you can use. This ultra-fine aluminum silicate powder contains no limestone, glass, or sand and shakes compl.. [More] chinchilladustbath5.jpg

Evolution Aqua Introduces K1 Micro Media
Posted By : Guest Filed Under : Evolution Aqua
Filter media has never been so exciting! The Kaldnes 'K' series of media has been around for well over two decades, and it is widely used in aquaculture as the basis of the highly efficient biofilters required for heavily-stocked systems. Owners of Evolution Aqua’s Nexus range of pond filters will be familiar with K1 and larger K3 media, but its use in aquarium filtration has been pretty limited. With this new 'baby' version of K1, Evolution Aqua is hoping to change that, but it will also still be of interest to pond owners. In fact, the possibilities are almost endless.   What is K1 Micro? K1 Micro is an even smaller version of standard K1, measuring approximately 6 x 6mm. The polyethylene media has a specific wheel-like shape, with a cross-shaped central portion. By shrinking the size of the media, Evolution Aqua has managed to up the surface area per unit volume, allowing for more space for bacterial colonization. However, surface area isn&rsqu.. How Does Nexus Koi Pond Filter Work?
Posted By : Guest Filed Under : Koi Pond | Evolution Aqua
The Evolution Aqua Nexus is considered as one of the most state-of-the-art pond filtration systems that is readily available in the industry today and has since created quite the hype amongst both hobbyists and professional pond owners.   It's system utilizes a heavy-duty mechanical filter that comes in the shape of a stainless steel grill container. It is also equipped with a mechanically-aided biological filter that keeps your water in the filter flowing to make sure and give assurance that any nitrifying bacteria gets working on the high volume of ammonia in the pond.  How the Nexus Works  Water from the pond enters the nexus via the inlet into the inner chamber hich works as a vortex allowing larger solids to settle out. Water then passes through the grills in the stainless steel “Eazy” filter, where the finer particles are removed at the mechanical stage of filtration, thanks to the static bed of our award winning K1 Micro® filter me.. Why My Cat Has Stopped Eating?
Posted By : Guest Filed Under : Nutrition | Cats
Cats and food is always an interesting one. Unlike dogs, to whom food is often the ultimate reward, felines are noted for turning their perfectly formed little noses up at their dinner for no apparent reason. And, while the occasionally outburst of food fussiness is nothing to worry about, if your cat has obviously stopped eating, this can be a real cause for concern.   Not eating can have an impact on your cat’s health even after as little as 24 hours. For a kitten, especially if they’re younger than six weeks old, avoiding food for just 12 hours can be damaging. Burgess in-house vet Dr Suzanne Moyes says: “Not eating is really dangerous for cats. When animals don’t eat enough, they must rely on their fat reserves for energy. Before stored fat can be used for fuel, it must be processed by the liver, which requires adequate supplies of protein. With rapid weight loss, protein supplies are soon exhausted and the liver becomes overwhelmed by fat. Th.. [More] catslovingburgess.png

How To Identify Diseased Pond Fish
Posted By : Guest Filed Under : NT Labs | Koi Pond
Keeping fish should be an enjoyable and rewarding experience and knowing what signs to look out for is key for healthy and happy pets. Fish are less obvious than other animals when they are unwell and often subtle changes in their behaviour can signal something is wrong. A lot of fish diseases are difficult to see without close inspection but most conditions and diseases bring about a change in behaviour.   What is normal fish behaviour? What to look out for: - A happy, healthy fish is usually one who swims at a normal pace, is alert to its surroundings and reacts quickly when food is introduced. Fish who rest listlessly, perhaps on their sides, fins clamped together and do not respond to food are obvious clues something is not right. Feeding time is therefore a great time to observe any abnormal behaviour. What is not normal fish behaviour? Erratic behaviours, such as sudden bursts of stop/start swimming, jumping and ‘flashing’ - where fish scr.. [More] ntlabs-koi76.jpg

Cats And The Benefits Of Neutering
Posted By : Guest
Neutering is a simple operation that will not only stop unwanted pregnancies, but also benefit your cat’s overall health and wellbeing. Feline welfare charities such as Cats Protection and International Cat Care state that getting your cat neutered before they can breed is an essential part of responsible cat ownership. Providing there is no medical reason not to, a good time to neuter your kitten is at four months of age, before they start to become sexually mature – although cats can be neutered at any age.   There are many benefits to neutering, for both female and male cats. When in season, unneutered cats will have much more physical strain put on their bodies than neutered cats, due to the changes in their hormones, increased activity and restlessness. The challenges for unneutered cats Unneutered female cats are more likely to suffer from pyometria (an infection in their womb) and cancers of the ovaries, uterus and mammary glands later in life. Unne.. [More] catsbeingneutered.jpg
