Benefits of LED Lighting
Posted By : Guest Filed Under : Aquatics | Aquael | Tropical Aquariums | Fish | Marine Aquariums
LED (Light Emitting Diodes) lighting is fast becoming the preferred choice for aquarists, as it uses less electricity than standard forms, lasts much longer and produces up to 80% more light than traditional fluorescent tubes. It produces a deeper, purer light to support healthy plant growth, enhance natural colours and illuminate stunning marine life. The light seems to penetrate the deepest corners of the tank, showing off every aspect of the life within. Traditional fluorescent lighting, whilst a long standing favourite, has some disadvantages. It emits heat, which can be transferred to the water, doesn’t have a long shelf life, and can easily be damaged both in transit and once it’s in situ in the aquarium. LED lighting can be adjusted and dimmed to adapt to your own personal lighting schedule, and as it’s a compact, light, product it’s easier to transport, fit and maintain. LED lighting also has the added bonus of creating a very realistic s.. [More] leddysmartlamps.jpg

Testing Your Aquarium Water
Posted By : Guest Filed Under : Aquatics | Tropical Aquariums | Fish | Marine Aquariums
An essential part of owning a marine aquarium is the on-going testing and monitoring of the water that your fish, plants and corals grow and live in. The most successful fish keepers and aquascapers regularly check their water rather than waiting before a problem occurs.   There are plenty of things that need checking regularly in aquarium water; some of which can cause serious health problems if they fluctuate too wildly. Others may cause fatalities for your aquatic life even if the change is minimal. It is of paramount importance to check your aquarium regularly for a number of reasons. Firstly it allows you to see what the conditions of your tank are like, which gives you a clear indication of the environment your aquatic life inhabits. Testing can reveal the early signs of problems within the tank, and this makes them much easier and quicker to deal with, than waiting for a problem to fully manifest itself. In addition testing will let you know if your tank has.. [More] aquariumwater.jpg

Starting Your First Planted Aquarium
Posted By : Guest Filed Under : Aquatics | Tropical Aquariums | Aquascaping
Setting up a planted aquarium may seem like a big task to start with which may put some people off, but you can make a basic planted tank very easily and the extra maintenance is worth it for a beautiful and more natural aquarium. For a basic tank, we will start with a low-tech aquarium such as Aquael Shrimpset and Brillux tanks – leaving out CO2. This will mean that your planted aquarium will take longer to grow and you may not be able to grow certain plants, but is much easier for a beginner. You do not have to do any water testing or changes, do not have to prune your plants as much and algae growth is much slower. If you are happy to put up with a bit more hassle and want your tank to grow quicker, then we would recommend including CO2 in your planted aquarium set-up. There are a few steps you must follow to get started with your planted aquarium. It may be worth having a rough vision of what you would like to achieve before you start to make sure you get t.. Choosing The Right Aquarium
Posted By : Guest Filed Under : Aquatics | Tropical Aquariums
Successful aquariums depend greatly on research and preparation. Just as you research the care requirements of the fish you are interested in, you will also need to think about fundamental aspects such as aquarium placement. Before you install your new aquarium, consider aquarium placement and size to avoid laborious and costly mistakes. Location An aquarium placed in a back room or basement may not receive the care or attention it needs. Oftentimes a poorly located aquarium can result in neglect, increasing risk of fish disease or equipment malfunction that remains unnoticed. Set up your aquarium where you spend most of your time. By doing so, you can fully enjoy the results of your endeavour. Choose a room where you will be able to view and take pleasure in your aquatic system. But more importantly, place the aquarium where it is easily accessible for regular and convenient maintenance. Keep in mind, once fully set up, aquariums weigh 1 kilogram per 1 litre of wate.. How To Cycle A New Fish Tank
Posted By : Guest Filed Under : Aquatics | Tropical Aquariums | Fish | Marine Aquariums
When researching your new fish tank, a phrase that is bound to come up is Fishless Cycling. It’s not a phrase with the most obvious meaning (especially to a novice), so finding out what it is, how it works and why you should be doing it can be a little daunting.  New Tank Syndrome Before you can properly understand Fishless Cycling, we need to take a look at New Tank Syndrome, the solution for which is often referred to as Fishless Cycling. New tank syndrome often refers to the problem faced by most tanks shortly after set-up, where the tank has insufficient cultures of beneficial bacteria present within the filter and live rock/substrate to deal with the increased ammonia levels caused by the fish in the tank. Ammonia is present because it is expelled by your fish as waste bio-product,eg excrement etc. High levels of it can be really bad for your aquarium, burning your fish’s scales due to its alkaline nature, inhibiting your fishes ability.. Enjoy cleaner, clearer aquarium water and routine filter maintenance that's a breeze! The Aquael Midikani 800 canister filter features four preloaded media chambers and a filter cover with a quick-release valve block that doubles as a filter output regulator. Simply turn the valve to adjust filter flow rate and a 90-degree turn of the valve completely stops water flow into the canister filter. Water flow is cleverly diverted back into your aquarium, allowing the pump to maintain vital circulation in your aquarium even as you disconnect .. [More] MIDIKANI blog.jpg

Aquascaping With Small Nano Tanks
Posted By : Guest Filed Under : Aquatics | Aquael | Tropical Aquariums | Fish | Aquascaping
Tiny aquatic gardens are all the rage; perfect for the aquarist with limited space, or for those who simply enjoy the aesthetic of a scale-model planted layout, with all the benefits and challenges that come with it. Most people get started in the hobby with the typical 30 or 72 litre tank because these sizes are widely available as inexpensive starter kits. Those who get hooked on the hobby quickly find that this not enough, and the desire for a bigger tank sets in. For some a 112 litre tank may be enough, while others lust after a 240 or even 375 litre tank. Big tanks can be a lot of fun, and larger systems are often more stable than small ones, but big tanks are also a lot of work and are more expensive to set up, stock, and maintain. Whatever the reason, in recent years, nano tanks have become a popular alternative to explore the hobby in greater depth, particularly for those of us interested in aquatic gardening. What’s a Nano Tank, and Why B.. [More] shrimpset_nano_aquascape.jpg

New Stylish Aquael Aludekor Aquariums
Posted By : Guest Filed Under : Aquael | Aquatics | Tropical Aquariums | Fish
Aquael presents this stunning range of aquariums now in South Africa, which provide a high quality finish that is well suited to any modern environment. The Aquael Aludekor aquariums and cabinets are available in a range of sizes from 80 to 150cm. All units are supplied without filtration or heating equipment, enabling you to choose your own prefered brand. We do however recommend using the Aquael Unimax canister filters and comfortzone heaters. ALUDEKOR water tanks are made of durable glass panels of proper thickness that are bonded with special black silicone. This not only makes the tank durable and watertight but also reduces the discernibility of dirt and sediment. The lid of the water tank included in the ALUDEKOR set is made of aluminium profiles and plastic plates. The lid is decorated with veneer strips that can be selected to suite the room interior. For your convenience, with each set we include veneer strips in four colours: black, beech, wenge, and alder. Ha.. [More] ALUDEKOR TANKS.jpg
