Keeping Your Dog Safe When Travelling On The Road
Posted By : Guest Filed Under : Dogs
South Africa’s majestic landscapes, pristine seascapes and excellent roads make it an excellent choice for those seeking to enjoy the ultimate in freedom travel: a road trip. With stunning places to visit such as the lush Knysna Forest, the stunning Marakele National Park or the rugged Wild Coast, road trips are the perfect way to throw caution to the wind and bond with family members - logically, this includes your dog! In this post we focus on a few safety issues to watch out for, so that  driving ‘into the wild’ with man’s best friend is a totally stress-free experience.     Reducing Anxiety in Dogs   Road travel can be anxious for dogs who are not used to being in cars. Therefore, from the time your pooch is a pup, it is important to take him for rides in your car, which increase in length. Don’t fear if your dog is an adult, though; desensitise him to his fear if it exists, by taking him for very short driv.. [More] dogoutside.jpg

Anxiety Issues In Today’s Pets
Posted By : Guest Filed Under : Pet Care | Dogs | Cats | Pet Remedy
With anxiety in humans on the rise, it is hardly surprising that anxiety is now a huge issue for many pets.  Dogs, in particular, are often afflicted.  This can be triggered by loud noises e.g. fireworks or thunderstorms, being alone and also by social interactions with other dogs.  Depending on each individual dog, they may be affected by one or more triggers.       When feeling anxious dogs often bark, pace, pant, and lick excessively.  In addition, they can exhibit destructive or aggressive behaviour.  One treatment that often helps break the trigger/reaction cycle is the use of calming sprays and wipes or plug-in diffusers which can alter the brain’s neuro-transmitters thereby deflecting the anxiety state.     Super hearing, super pets   The amazing hearing capabilities of dogs and cats, where sound is perceived as 5 times louder than for humans, may well account for the fact that.. Muesli Style Diets Are Unhealthy
Posted By : Guest Filed Under : Nutrition | Rabbits | Guinea Pigs | Chinchillas | Guinea Pig Food | Rabbit Food | Timothy Hay | Pet Care
Selective feeding occurs when rabbits choose some components of the muesli diet in preference to others. Rabbits will naturally select the higher energy (high sugar or starch elements) and reject the pellets. This results in an unbalanced diet, as the pellets are often supplemented with minerals and vitamins as well as often being high in fibre.   Selective feeding increases the risk of the problems below: - dental disease - gut stasis and other digestive problems - fly strike - reduced fibre intake - reduced water intake Rabbits fed muesli style diets eat less hay leading to a reduced fibre intake. These issues have been highlighted in research by Professor Anne Meredith. The results have been published in peer reviewed journals. As a result of this research many pet retailers in UK removed muesli style diets from their shelves in 2013 and we have continued to educate vets, retailers and rabbit owners on the importance of correct nutrition for .. Burgess Cat Food Now in South Africa

Cats are obligate carnivores. Essentially this means that cats must eat meat or fish in their daily diet and that vegetarianism is generally not considered an option for cats. Their diets should contain a high level of good quality meat or fish and animal fat and small quantities of fish oil are also beneficial for skin and coat condition. Cats require a careful balance of at least 13 different vitamins, plus the essential amino acid taurine necessary to promote a healthy heart and eyes. A complete diet will have all the necessary vitamins and amino acids in the right ratio, either derived from the raw materials themselves or from added supplements. Good manufacturers use protected vitamins to prevent them being degraded by processing. With the right food from a reputable supplier, there is no need to give your cat extra vitamins and over dosing of vitamins can be harmful.   Nutrition For Kittens – A Complete Cat Food Start to feed the mother on kitten food such as .. 5 Steps to Correct Destructive Dog Chewing
Posted By : Guest Filed Under : Dogs
According to an IOL article, there are 9.1 million dogs in South Africa compared to 2.4 million cats effectively making it a dog country. Many dogs are avid chewers as it is one of their inbuilt traits. The ASPCA notes that dogs use this instinct to explore objects, alleviate teething discomfort, relieve anxiety and frustration, and to keep themselves amused. When your pet directs the chewing towards inappropriate items such as furniture, you need to take some steps. Below is a guide to eliminating destructive chewing in dogs.     Find a Suitable Chew Toy   It can be frustrating when you find out that your dog has gnawed on your table, chair, cabinet or door. Veterinarians will tell you that the majority of diseases seen in pet parrots today all have the same underlying problem, a poor diet. An all-seed diet is highly likely to result in a myriad of health problems and shorten your bird’s lifespan significantly. Although many pet stores will try to convince you otherwise, a healthy, balanced diet for parrots is not providing a fresh bowl of seeds every morning. In fact, a diet consisting of only seeds is a pretty certain way to shorten your parrots’ life. Let’s look at why this is so, and what we can do to ensure our parrots live a long and healthy life!   Budgie enjoys healthy meal of broccoli, corn, peppers and Roudybush Crumbles Pet Parrots Aren’t Wild The first thing to know about parrots in the wild is that they are usually always flying vast distances in order to find food. Keeping Your Pets Safe in the Pool
Posted By : Guest Filed Under : Pet Care
If you are lucky enough to be one of the 950,000 people in South Africa who own a beautiful pool and garden, then without a doubt, you make the most of your garden by hosting barbecues, candlelit dinners, or family get-togethers. In the warmer months, the pool is usually the nucleus of activity, and just about the only bad thing about it from a pet owner’s perspective, is that it has the potential to be a safety risk. In this post, we focus on how to stop your pet from being just another statistic.   Teaching Your Dog to Swim   Should your pet fall into the pool, he should know how to swim right out of it, so teach him to swim from an early age. Ideally, a trainer will help you out but you might like to have a go yourself, starting out by letting your dog splash around in the tub or in a plastic kiddie swimming pool with water that reaches around halfway up his legs.   When you think your dog is confident enough, use a safety vest to introduc.. Crucial Elements of Pet Friendly Lawn
Posted By : Guest Filed Under : Pet Care | Dogs | Cats
South Africa has the largest number of pets in Africa, with numbers totaling 7.4 million for dogs, and 2 million for cats. If you are one of these many lucky pet owners, you probably love nothing better than spending time in the Great Outdoors playing, walking, or just relaxing with your pet. Both dogs and cats love running and jumping in the garden, and dogs also benefit from at least one walk a day. Keep your lawn safe for your dog by removing the biggest risks and toxins, and stopping your dog from escaping.   De-Cluttering Your Garden   Your dog will probably run at lightning speed from one end of the garden to another, pouncing on leaves and rolling in the grass. Reduce the chances of injury by keeping the yard completely free of sharp tools and machines your dog can fall on or trip over.   Store all chemicals and cleaning products in a garden shed, to avoid ingestion.   Avoiding Toxic Plants   If your garden is filled with v.. Christmas Perils For Our Pets
Posted By : Guest Filed Under : Rabbits | Guinea Pigs | Chinchillas | Hamsters | Pet Care | Rats and Mice | Degus | Gerbils | Dogs | Cats
‘Tis the season to be jolly but, for our pets, it’s also a time of hazardous foods, poisonous plants and dangerous decorations. Ensure the four-legged members of your family have a safe and happy Christmas by following DR SUZANNE MOYES’ festive advice For those pets who have seen a Christmas or two, the sudden arrival of a pine tree, tinsel and plates piled high with mince pies, will likely be taken in their stride. However, for young animals, all these exciting new things require close inspection, which can lead to all sorts of problems.   All You Can't Eat At this time of the year, many of the foods we love to tuck into will do our pets more harm than good – so those pleading eyes must be ignored. It’s far better to keep your pets on their usual Burgess diet. Festive foods on the blacklist include: Pigs in blankets: Fatty, salty meats such as pork can lead to pancreatitis. Mince pies and Christmas cake: Raisins and sultanas (a.. [More] catchristmastree.jpg
