Endangered Western Leopard Toad
Posted By : Guest Filed Under : Uncategorized | Amphibians | News
The Western Leopard Toad is classified according to the IUCN Red List as an Endangered species. It lives in Cape Town and the Agulhas Plain. As such it shares its home with millions of Capetonians. As toads go, it is larger than most and exquisitely marked. It happily co-exists with humans in the suburbs, and would be just another beautiful inhabitant of Cape Town if it were not for the fact that it is an explosive breeder! Every year, for a few days usually in August, toady goes a courting. This is unusual in that it is confined to less than a week a year. Thousands of toads migrate to suitable ponds. There the males snore and fight for the females. The females lay their eggs and depart, migrating back to their gardens. The exhausted males follow later when no more females arrive at the pools. Again, this would be perfectly natural were it not for the fact that we have built roads and highways all around their breeding ponds. And so every year there is a proble.. Why You Should Neuter Rabbits
Posted By : Guest Filed Under : Rabbits | Pet Care
Rabbits are great pets when cared for correctly. It is, however, almost impossible to care for all the litters that your rabbits and their rabbits could have in just a few short years. But, that’s not the only reason to have your rabbits neutered; there are plenty of additional health benefits for your rabbit.     What Is Neutering and How Does It Help? In male rabbits, neutering is the removal of the testes, which obviously prevents pregnancy. The process is slightly more advanced for female rabbits as it involves the removal of the uterus and ovaries during surgery. This procedure is often called spaying. Rabbit medicine and surgery has advanced in recent years, and these procedures are now performed much more commonly. General anaesthetics have also advanced and have become safer for rabbits. Modern medicines also mean any post operation pain can be controlled. Surgeries are now recommended for health reasons. Neutering helps with: Preventing pr.. [More] RAWrabbits.jpg

Feeding Your Budgie (Parakeet)
Posted By : Guest Filed Under : Nutrition | Birds | Roudybush | Bird Food | Budgies
Giving your budgie the proper nutrition is important if you expect it to live for many years. Seeds were once the only food that bird enthusiasts believed were the proper way to feed their birds. But new research has proved that seed mixes don't contain enough calcium, iodine and vitamin A, and they contain too much fat, which is harmful to your budgie's health and may shorten their lifespan. Most domesticated budgies die between the age of 3 and 7, and this is often due to malnutrition. So what should the budgie be fed? The first thing is to introduce pellets to your budgie. This needs to be pellets that do not contain preservatives, artificial flavourings, or colourings such as Roudybush Daily Maintenance - Nibles. If you choose another brand, just be sure no added sugars are included inside the mix you choose. In general budgies can be picky eaters. For some reason these parrots are stubborn and it takes time to incorporate new foods into their diet. It is even mo.. [More] girlfeedingparakeet.jpg

African Grey Diet & Nutrition
Posted By : Guest Filed Under : Birds | Roudybush | Bird Food | African Grey
A variety of foods is important to providing the diet and nutrition that your African Grey parrot needs to have a happy and healthy life. There are many differing opinions and thoughts on African Grey diet and nutrition and there is no exact formula for feeding your companion parrot. Provide the most balanced diet for your African Grey as possible.   As a base, a pelleted diet is the best way to go for your African Grey. Preferably, an organically processed pellet, and not one that has additives, such as artificial colouring and flavouring. Seeds are high in fat and are not considered a healthy diet for your African Grey Parrot. Do not give vitamin supplements to your African Grey without talking to your avian veterinarian. Most African Greys on a pelleted diet do not need them. Provide an assortment of fresh, wholesome, organic vegetables. As with any child, sometimes it can be a challenge to get them to eat their veggies so you might have to spend some time encour.. [More] africangreys.jpg

Become A Responsible Rabbit Owner
Posted By : Guest Filed Under : Rabbits | Pet Care | Pet Cages
Rabbits make fantastic pets, they love quiet spaces and require only a bit of affection from their generous owners. Ideally rabbits have at least one bunny friend to spend their days with, so they are ready for your affection when you come home in the evening. Give them this, plenty of timothy hay, and there is only one thing left to do – provide your bunnies with the perfect home. Unfortunately, that is not simply a hutch… That is only the beginning.   The Rabbit Hutch Whether you call it a hutch or a cage and whether it is indoors or out, this is the beginning of your rabbit’s home. Consider the hutch to be a bedroom. It is a comfortable and secure space to sleep. Ideally you would have one hutch per rabbit to hide and rest in, and another larger one that all your bunnies can sleep in together (if they are in the mood for that). These should all be connected in some way, though rabbits should not have to go through each other’s be.. [More] rabbit as pets.jpg

Keeping A Praying Mantis Pet
Posted By : Guest Filed Under : Pet Care | Mantids
Keeping a Praying Mantis as a pet is easy to do, once you learn a few things about them. The first thing you will want to find is a home for your little pet. You can keep them in a nice big vivarium, but Mantises are perfectly content in smaller enclosures with a height of approx. 2.5 times their length and about 2 times their length in width. (So a 5cm mantis would do well in a container 12.5cm tall and 10cm across.) Whatever you keep them in, they will spend most of their time hanging upside down, waiting on their prey to get close enough for them to grab them with their raptors. Your Mantis will need air, so you will need to make sure that it is ventilated, but you don't want the holes too large, or your pets’ food might escape. If you decide on a larger enclosure, you will need lots of things for your pet mantis to climb around on. You can use just about anything such as ivy, sticks, etc... Let your creativity guide you. Make sure that all of the items in your.. [More] mantis as pets.jpg

Tips For Rabbit Enrichment
Posted By : Guest Filed Under : Rabbits | Pet Care
Rabbits require mental and physical stimulation and toys are the perfect way of keeping your bunnies fit and their minds occupied. Just like small children, rabbits get bored and this is when they go and look for their own fun. If you don’t want chewed carpets and curtains and a ruined garden then you’ll need to provide your rabbits with alternative activities. Different rabbits are going to enjoy different toys, so you may need to test a few before you find the ones that your rabbits will prefer. Changing toys around will prevent your rabbits from getting bored. The problem is that pet shops sell toys but lots of them won’t be suitable for your rabbits. Spending a fortune isn’t necessary; there will be plenty of things lying around your house that you can turn into bunny toys for free. Paper and paper bags Shredded and screwed up paper, telephone directories etc… all of these things will make fun types of toys. Try hiding treat.. [More] nice rabbit.jpg

Letting Budgies Fly Outside
Posted By : Guest Filed Under : Birds | Budgies
Flying time helps keep budgies healthy and happy. Also called parakeets and budgerigars, budgies are bright, curious and sociable birds, and they enjoy time spent outside their cages in safe environments where they can exercise and explore. Trained budgies leave and return to their cages when directed by their owners, but untrained birds can be difficult to catch. Flying Time Budgies need exercise and socialization time to stay healthy. Birds who never leave their cages become overweight and develop illnesses such as fatty liver disease and tumors. Budgies live in flocks in the wild, so they also need to spend time with their caregivers and other birds. Let trained budgies out of their cages into a safe room every day and allow them to fly around for an hour or so. Untrained birds also require time outside their cages but you may want to have their wings clipped for safety. Veterinary surgeons can clip budgies' wings. Safety Precautions Homes contain many hazar.. [More] budgies as pets.jpg
