Common Rabbit Diet Myths
Posted By : Guest Filed Under : Nutrition | Rabbits | Rabbit Food | Pet Care
Rabbits eat mainly carrots, right? Wrong! There are lots of misconceptions about what rabbits should eat. Find out what rabbits really should eat to stay healthy! Myth #1 - Rabbits eat carrots Carrots shouldn’t be main source of food. Rabbits don't naturally eat root vegetables/fruit. Carrots/fruit are high in sugar and should only be fed in small amounts as occasional treats. Rabbits need mainly hay and/or grass, some leafy greens and a small, measured amount of pellets. Myth #2 - Hay is just bedding Hay isn’t just bedding. Fresh, dust–free hay should be their main source of food available at all times. We recommend Timothy hay because it is high in protein and other nutrients and has lots of beneficial fibre. Myth #3 - Rabbits eat lettuce Diets shouldn’t be lettuce based. Rabbits shouldn’t eat some lettuces (e.g. iceberg) as they contain laudanum which can be harmful in large quantities. Some lettuce is "worse".. [More] rabbit eating grass.jpg

Hamster Ball Racing
Posted By : Guest Filed Under : Small Animal Toys | Pet Accesories | Hamsters
Hamster racing is a sport in which hamsters are placed in hamster wheels or hamster balls, often fitted to miniature racing vehicles, and raced down a straight 9 meter course. The hamster crossing the finish line in the shortest amount of time wins. According to a 2001 media report, the world-record time for this course setup is 38 seconds. Events may feature as few as two hamsters or many teams of hamsters and human pit crews. Hamster balls may be simple spheres or feature many design modifications purported to increase the performance and style of the race vehicle. In the United Kingdom, gamblers can place bets on the outcome of hamster races through online bookmakers. Professional racing In 2001, an epidemic of foot and mouth disease caused the cancellation of some British horse races and other sporting events. To boost their lagging bookmaking incomes, betting agencies introduced and promoted the concept of professional hamster racing. Online bookmaker Blue Squa.. [More] hamster ball racing.jpg

Know Your Rabbit Health
Posted By : Guest Filed Under : Rabbits | Pet Care
Pets make a delightful addition to many families. But, furry friends, just like their human counterparts need daily care and a bit of affection too. It applies to rabbits as much as it does for some of the more persistent pets (did anyone say puppies?). Fortunately, bunnies tend to exercise themselves, given enough room to run, which takes that strain off owners who are not keen for a nightly walk. But, they do require veterinary care and immediate attention if they become ill or contract a disease. However, rabbits do not tend to let their owners know when they are suffering – you’ve just got to be alert. Not sure what you are looking for or need to know? Illnesses Requiring Annual Vaccinations Myxomatosis What Is It? Myxomatosis is an extremely fatal virus. Most rabbits are unable to recover once they contract this disease. It is spread through biting insects like mosquitoes and fleas. Occasionally it is also spread through direct contact w.. [More] vet holding rabbit.jpg

Muesli Vs Pellets Research
Posted By : Guest Filed Under : Nutrition | Chinchillas | Guinea Pig Food | Rabbit Food
Last April there was a lot of publicity over some joint research by the the Royal (Dick) School of Veterinary Studies and Burgess Pet Care into the effects of diet on rabbit’s health. The paper with the results was just published and I thought I’d summarise some of the findings for you. What they studied Thirty two dutch rabbits were neutered, vaccinated and divided into four groups to feed one of the following diets: Extruded nuggets with hay (EH) Muesli with hay (MH) Hay only (HO) Muesli only (MO) They were then monitored over an 18 month period to observe the impact of the diets. The researchers measured things like how much food they ate and what came out the other end, and took x-rays of their teeth at regular intervals. Hay Intake Unsurprisingly the hay only group had the largest hay intake, but there were also differences between the Muesli-Hay and Nugget-Hay groups, with the Nu.. [More] muesli vs pellets.jpg

Choosing Hamster Food
Posted By : Guest Filed Under : Nutrition | Hamsters | Hamster Food
When it comes to choosing the right food for your hamster it’s always best to pick a high quality food. There are several very cheap brands on the market but they may not have all the nutrients necessary to keep your hamster happy and healthy. Hamsters are naturally omnivorous, that is they need meat in their diet as well as vegetables and cereals. This isn’t a commonly known fact. Many people presume hamsters are vegetarian and don’t eat meat and so they think they are providing a balanced diet with just vegetables and a cereal food. Instead pick a good quality hamster food that contains meat. The meat content is likely to be mealworms which hamsters just adore, so you’ll not only be giving him the best food for his well being, you’ll be giving him an interesting and tasty diet too. It’s always best to pick a food that has been specifically developed for hamsters rather than a generic small animal food. You wouldn’t feed d.. [More] hamster eating tomato blog.jpg

Setting Up Tropical Aquarium
Posted By : Guest Filed Under : Aquatics | Tropical Aquariums
An aquarium can provide a perfect centrepiece for any room and can be beautiful, relaxing and educational. While setting up a tropical aquarium may seem like a daunting task at first, this can be done with ease after putting a little bit of time aside to plan what you want to include. Before purchasing your aquarium, you need to think about where you’re going to keep it and what you want to include. It may come as a surprise, but more often than not larger aquariums are easier to maintain as they need cleaning less often and make it easier to regulate the water quality and keep your fish healthy. A larger aquarium also allows more room for fish to grow and live happily. One of the most detrimental factors on a fish’s health can be a small tank. There are thousands of species of tropical fish to choose from, some of which need more care than others. It’s also worth bearing in mind that some tropical fish may need different equipment inside the tank and.. [More] setting up tropical aquarium.jpg
