Choosing Hamster Food
Posted By : Guest Filed Under : Nutrition | Hamsters | Hamster Food
When it comes to choosing the right food for your hamster it’s always best to pick a high quality food. There are several very cheap brands on the market but they may not have all the nutrients necessary to keep your hamster happy and healthy.

Hamsters are naturally omnivorous, that is they need meat in their diet as well as vegetables and cereals. This isn’t a commonly known fact. Many people presume hamsters are vegetarian and don’t eat meat and so they think they are providing a balanced diet with just vegetables and a cereal food. Instead pick a good quality hamster food that contains meat. The meat content is likely to be mealworms which hamsters just adore, so you’ll not only be giving him the best food for his well being, you’ll be giving him an interesting and tasty diet too.

It’s always best to pick a food that has been specifically developed for hamsters rather than a generic small animal food. You wouldn’t feed dog food to your cat, so don’t feed guinea pig food to your hamster! All small animals have different dietary requirements, so picking a food meant just for hamsters means you can rest assured that your pet is getting exactly the right nutrition that they need. Burgess Supahamster is a specialist hamster food that has been formulated to deliver a tasty, nutritious and healthy diet in every bowlful.

As hamsters eat such a small amount, a good quality food works out to be very affordable. You don’t generally need to worry about your hamster overeating so you can feed him fresh food daily. You’ll find that he will stuff his pouches full and go and hide most of his food for later. Because of this tendency to hoard food you need to make sure you clean your hamster our regularly and get rid of the stored food, especially if he likes to store fruit and vegetables which will soon rot.

A good quality complete hamster food will provide everything your hamster needs. He’ll have all the vitamins and nutrients to keep him healthy, and he’ll enjoy it too, however, all pets love a treat, so you can also feed him fresh vegetables such as carrots or cucumber. Don’t overdo the vegetables though as they can upset your hamsters tummy.

You must make sure your hamster has fresh water at all times, you can also give them a little milk on occasion as a treat but make sure you remove it before it goes sour! If you have a pet dog or cat, the occasional dog or cat biscuit is a great cheap treat for a hamster, he will spend many happy hours gnawing away on a dog biscuit and it will help to keep his teeth in good condition too.
