Posted By : Guest Filed Under : Rabbits | Pet Care
There are a number of different plants that are poisonous to rabbits. And, while it is obvious that certain plants should not be kept in the same habitat as your pet rabbits, there are many more plants that you’ve probably never considered. Harmful plants can include certain types of fruit bearing trees, ivies and a host of beautiful flowering plants.

We’ve included here a short list of plants that are poisonous when consumed by rabbits. This list includes plants that are most commonly kept in homes, but there are many more.

For a complete list of poisonous plants, you can refer to the Rabbit Awareness Week Website. Remember, just because you don’t see a plant listed here, it does not mean it’s safe for your pet to consume.

What Happens If Your Rabbit Eats a Poisonous Plant?

Rabbits can become severely ill if they ingest a poisonous plant. That said, the obvious path is to avoid having these plants on your property. However, sometimes, you may just not realise that a plant is poisonous. So, it is best to understand the symptoms of poisoning in rabbits. Typically, these can include:
  • Seizures
  • Digestive signs of intestinal inflammation
  • Lethargy or listlessness
  • Loss of body temperature regulation – high or low
  • Loss of appetite
If your rabbit displays any of these symptoms, whether or not you believe they’ve ingested poisonous plants, always rush to the vet. In most cases, poisoning can be treated if caught soon enough and with medical intervention.

Top Tips to Take Away:
  • Just because rabbits are herbivores, it doesn’t mean they can eat every plant. There are many plants that are poisonous to your rabbits.
  • Many plants that are toxic for rabbits are common household plants or garden trees. Always consult a full list before adopting a rabbit or bringing new plants onto your property.
  • Symptoms of poisoning can range from appetite loss to seizures; any of the symptoms demands immediate intervention.
  • If you suspect poisoning, always take your rabbit (or any other pets) to the vet immediately.
