Pet ownership in South Africa is on the rise with an estimated 9.2 million dogs residing in South African households, according to a 2016 survey. As a result, many South African motorists regularly drive with their pets on board when running errands in their neighbourhoods or even when taking long road trips. Taking pets on trips provides mental stimulation and gives them a chance to experience different environments.
However, what seems to be a fun experience for you and your pet can quickly turn tragic if you don't take the necessary safety precautions. Luckily, there are many things you can do to ensure you and your pet always make it to your destinations safe and sound.
Have the right vehicle
Not all vehicles will be comfortable for your furry friend. If you know that you will be travelling regularly with your pet, you should have a vehicle that is well-equipped to suit your pet's needs. For instance, if you own a big size dog like a Great Dane, a sports car won't cut it if you want your dog to be comfortable and safe during your trip. In this case, you're better off investing in an SUV or a family van with ample space for your dog. You should also consider other safety features in the vehicle you're buying such as electronic stability control, forward collision warning, animal detection system, blinds spot monitoring, among others. The better the safety features, the safer you and your pet will be during your travels.
Take the necessary safety precautions
There are many things you need to keep an eye on when travelling with your pet. First of all, you must ensure that the pets cannot do anything to distract the driver. You can do this by installing net pet barriers or restraining your pet with a safety harness. You also need to keep the windows closed or just slightly rolled down to prevent your pet from jumping out. Pets like dogs can get overly curious or excited and jump out of a speeding vehicle.
Never leave your pet alone in the car
You should never leave your pet alone in the car even if you are just rushing into the store to pick up a few things. Some pets can get anxious when left alone in a car which can lead to emotional distress and even destruction of your vehicle's interior in some cases. Leaving your pet alone in the car is also dangerous to their health. On a hot day, pets can suffer from heatstroke which can cause brain damage or worse.
Taking trips with your pet is a win-win for both of you. You get a companion on your trips and your pet gets to enjoy new sights and experiences. However, you must choose the right vehicle and take all the necessary precautions to ensure that you and your pet arrive safely at your destination.
