Pet ownership in South Africa is on the rise with an estimated 9.2 million dogs residing in South African households, according to a 2016 survey. As a result, many South African motorists regularly drive with their pets on board when running errands in their neighbourhoods or even when taking long road trips. Taking pets on trips provides mental stimulation and gives them a chance to experience different environments.
However, what seems to be a fun experience for you and your pet can quickly turn tragic if you don't take the necessary safety precautions. Luckily, there are many things you can do to ensure you and your pet always make it to your destinations safe and sound.
Have the right vehicle
Not all vehicles will be comfortable for your furry friend. If you know that you will be travelling regularly with your pet, you should have a vehicle that is well-equipped to suit your pet's needs. For instance, if you own a .. [More]

Degus are sociable, speedy rodents have very different needs from other small furries and providing the correct diet is an essential part of keeping them healthy and happy.
In the wild, degus – who are native to northern and central Chile and live high up in the Andes mountain range – survive on grass and other green vegetation, bark and seeds. In fact, compared to other rodents, degus need to consume large amounts of fibre – at Burgess, they refer to them as ‘fibrevores’.
That’s why hay should make up a large part of their diet. Each day, you need to provide a minimum of their body size in high quality feeding hay to enable their digestive systems to function properly. Chomping on plenty of fresh, tasty hay will also help your degus’ dental health by keeping their continuously growing teeth at the correct length and shape.
DID YOU KNOW?
Wild degus live in groups of up to 100, where they dig complex burrows to .. [More]

After years of research and development, NT Labs in UK is bringing out its Marine Lab range.
A spokesman said: “These liquid testing kits have been expertly developed to give marine fishkeepers easy-to-use tools to monitor water quality without compromising on accuracy or precision.
“This stylish new range includes all the essential tests you will need to maintain a thriving marine aquarium.”
The range of liquid tests includes kits for ammonia, nitrite, nitrate, pH, carbonate hardness, magnesium, calcium and phosphate.
The calcium and magnesium tests use syringe-style titrations tests for accurate results, while the carbonate hardness tests use a drop-wise titration tests.
“The others are ‘easy-to-use colourimetric tests’ in which users count drops from the reagent bottles, and compare to the colour chart on the side of the carton.

What’s the difference between a food allergy and food intolerance? And how can you tell if your dog or cat is suffering from one or the other? Itchy skin, upset tummy, weight loss? These can all be symptoms caused by diet – although there could be many other reasons why your pet is out of sorts and you should always ask your vet for advice. But if you suspect food could be the issue, where do you start?
Food allergies and food intolerance are two different conditions which often have similar symptoms. While they are both examples of adverse food reactions, food allergies involve the animal’s immune system while food intolerances do not.
Food allergy or hypersensitivity
This occurs when a particular component of food (usually a protein) triggers the susceptible animal’s immune system to react, for example, cells may release histamine which causes itching.
Food or dietary intolerance
This occurs when something in the food doesn’t.. [More]

Resin reactors are a brand new concept in reef aquarium water treatment being promoted by Hmahli Marine Life Support Systems, specially designed for use with the Blue Life USA line of resins. Chemical medias such as activated carbon, granular ferric oxide and aluminum oxide are an important tool in the control of unwanted substances and nutrients in the reef aquarium.
More recently, a new class of chemical absorption and adsorption resins are pushing the envelope of nutrient removing performance, and some of them have the added benefit of being regenerable. Over the last several years Blue Life USA has grown to become one of the country’s leading supplier of water conditioning medias. With the FX Advanced Regenerable Resins line, Blue Life is making it both cheaper and easier to condition your water while reusing media resins for removing phosphates, nitrates and general organics.
The Nitrate FX, Phosphate FX and Organics FX are high capacity resins for removing s.. [More]

Do you know what the term “Internet of things” means? It is a concept according to which clearly identifiable objects can directly or indirectly collect, process or exchange data by means of the KNX smart electrical installation or a computer network. It also includes the increasingly popular solution for controlling and steering individual devices using mobile phone applications.
AQUAEL, keeping abreast of the times, introduces the world’s first aquarium lamp meeting these requirements, called the LEDDY SLIM LINK.
LEDDY SLIM LINK is a remotely controlled, universal LED lamp designed to illuminate open freshwater and marine aquariums. Fixed on the side edges of the tank panes, it constitutes an elegant alternative to the classic aquarium lid.
Its use allows for obtaining a unique decorative effect. Ideal for all types of aquariums. The free Aquael Aqu@rium application installed on your smartphone enables you to control the operation and parame.. [More]

Rossmont is a new company out of Italy that has been plugging away at making a new line of propeller pumps called Movers for aquariums. What makes Rossmont so revolutionary, is that they have designed a product called Waver that provides WiFi control of their AC pumps, a first in the aquarium hobby which is dominated by DC water pumps.
Besides the fundamental difference in how the Rossmont Movers are operated, resulting flow and functions are roughly the same as most water flow bundles containing two pumps and some kind of controller functions. But what is really different about the Rossmont Waver/Mover combo is that the user experience is wildly different, and the up-front cost is radically more affordable. To get this kind of flow from other manufacturers you’d have to spend quite a lot more.
Rossmont’s new Mover & Waver combos is a completely new value proposition when it comes to controllable, high quality propeller pumps. Keep in mind we’re no.. [More]

So-called natural aquariums, also known as Japanese aquariums or Amano style aquariums, are all the rage in modern aquaristics. The father of this concept, late Takashi Amano (1954-2015), was a Japanese nature photographer and aquaristics enthusiast.
When taking pictures of natural landscapes, such as the Amazon forest or the steppes, he wanted to try to transfer these behind the glass walls of the aquarium. Using natural decorations such as rocks, wood and roots as well as living plants, he began to create underwater forests, meadows and other landscapes. This trend was quickly adopted by many followers and enthusiasts all over the world.
Takashi Amano developed several basic styles of natural aquaristics. These include:
- ryuboku – an underwater forest. Using roots, wood and plants (mainly the so-called „epiphytes”), an image reminiscent of the primeval pristine forest flooded with water is reconstructed in the aquarium;
- mizube – a kind.. [More]
